Anderlecht Lock

Did you know that the locks in Brussels are extremely important to prevent flooding in the city centre? No? Well, you can learn from a real ‘éclusier’ or lock keeper how they work. This Sunday on May 6th, you can visit the Anderlecht lock for free from 10am to 5pm, during the Fête de l’Iris. Come and discover the city with family and friends in an original way, no booking required!

The Anderlecht Lock is the first of the Brussels Region when coming from the south and the tenth from Charleroi on the Brussels-Charleroi canal, which explains its number 10. The lock is very important for barges to get from a higher level of the canal to a lower level. It has another significant role to play in the sense that its staff is in charge of the regulation of the water levels of the canal.
